thing 23

I have now completed the twenty three things and have taken the online survey. I found it to be a great experience and I would glad participate in another one. I have learned alot and plan on using some of my new knowledge everyday. Sue

thng 22

I found that the 23 things on a stick project was challenging, interesting and very fun to do. I have learned alot by participating in it. I plan on keeping up with some of it. I might even start a blog page for my library for my patrons to use and to keep in touch with library happenings. I plan on using my google reader to keep informed. I will also check in with some of the other sites for librarians from time to time. I also plan to use the online tagging and calendar sites to help me with my job. So not only did I learn more about the internet and what's out there but I also plan on using many of my new skills that I didn't even know existed.

Thing 21

I checkout a few of these social networking sites. They all look interesting but I think they are mainly for people with alot of time on their hands. I really don't think I will join one as I am not really that fond of being connected to a computer so much. Being connected at work if often times enough computer usage for me.

thing 20

I'm not sure what I think of social networks. I know I'm not sure if I like so much information about myself out there on the web. I know they are very popular with the kids and my own son uses them. I signed up for a facebook account how ever the site would not recognize my email address so it didn't find any friends for me. I also signed up as a member for the American Library page. I also checked out my space and the library pages there but I didn't like the site as much as I liked the facebook site.

thing 19

I tried out the podcasts and found that a couple of them would not download onto my computer. However the NPR podcast site worked great. I listed to a couple of their podcasts and then I downloaded one to my blog. I found it very easy to do. It would be a great way to stay current with the news.

Thing 18

I checked out both you tube and google videos. I found both sites were easy to use but there is alot of stuff on both of them. I probably won't use them much as they are pretty much for entertainment. However it is nice to know that you can post video on your blog and how to do it so that if you wanted to post something you can. It was easy to post following the instructions you provided.

Thing 17

I tried out all of the various aspects of elm. I was already familiar with many of the different things they offer as I have already used may of the different features. I like the way elm works and how easy it is to use. I have already help many of my patron find articles and items on elm. However I was not able to view any of the video links that were set up. I downloaded the apple viewer but the video did not download on to my computer. I was disappointed in that.

thing 16

I looked at both the assignment calculator and the research project calculator. Both of them look very easy to use and I sure they both give plenty of hints and tips on how to research and write a great report. I liked some the handouts they had lots of information and a few had cute pictures. Some of them would be good to handout to students when they first come into the library to research a subject. It would give them a good starting point and it would make the librarian seem a bit more friendlier and willing to help the students who are a little bit shy. I wish the school systems would use this more as it would really help students when they are first learning to research and write a report.

thing 15

I tried the online library games. I loaded the puzzle pirates game and I was amazed for find out how long it took the game to load. For being a novice at games I found the pirate difficult to use but I'm sure any child go make the game go. I also looked at the second life game but I didn't sign up to play. I gues I'm not interested in games but it would be helpful to keep up with them as that's what most kids come to the library to use the computers do on them. Sue

Thing 14

I signed up for an account with LibraryThing. I found that it was very easy to post books to the site. I randomly chose five books from my library and added them to my account. I was also able to find others who as had posted those books to their site. I tried to post this to my blog but I don't think it connected. Sometime with these site the url's and things don't work when you post them. This would be good for bigger libraries. However I have many patrons here who are not computer fans and prefer to come in pick up a book and discuss it with other patrons. At the present I don't think I will use this site much for that reason buy maybe in the future this type of program will be more useful here. I guess were just an old fashioned library.

Thing 13

I didn't realize how many calendars, memo pages and etc. there were on the Web. I choose the igoogle for my home pages because it looked like the easiest one to work with and it came with alot of options. I choose the msn calendar because it was tied in with the hotmail so you don't need to open up many different web pages. The programs that allow you to make a list were all very interesting but I could see wherer they could also be time consuming to use. I think our of all of the productivity tools the calendar would be the most useful to me.

Thing 12--social Media sites

I checked out all of the different media sites. Each one was totally different in style and the type of content they had on their site. I there was quite a bit of site to go through but if you had a good reliable site to look up current information it could be very helpful when someone comes in to find out information on a current topic. However it could also be a time waster as you could spend alot of time going thru all of the stuff on one site to find what you are looking for.

Thing 11

I tried the del.icio.us thing. At first I really couldn't see how I would use it. But I signed up for an account and went to a cooking web site. I was surprised at how easy it was to tag the information and save it to del.icio.us. And at how easy it was to retrieve the information. I plan on trying this out more and learning more about how it works. I can see where you should be specific about the tags as it will help you find the information faster when you need it.

thing 10

The wiki thing was very interesting. I can see where they would be a great place to share informtion and ideas. However I can see why teachers won't let them be used for research because you have know why of knowing where the information in the post was corrected or not I really enjoy the mn150 wiki. It had alot of fun trivia and interesting comments. I didn't edit one because I didn't feel comfortable making changes but it seems like it would be very easy to edit.

thing 9

I can see where it would be great of you or someone else could edit documents on the web. However I too had trouble getting them to work. I signed up for permission thru goggle but they never did get back to me and the other service seemed harder to use. I guess it's something you need to have time to play with which I don't have time today

Thing 8

I used picture trail and made a cube to put on my blog. There were lots of ads but I made my way thru them. The cube was very easy to put together and would be a cute feature for a website.

Thing 7

There are many different ways we can all keep in touch with other librarians and our partons. I use email everyday here at work and that is a very helpful way to keep in touch with everyone and to get information. Email is probably the handiest tool I have here. If I have a question you email someone and get the answer. Of course sometimes you have to wait to get the answer but usually I'm not in a hurry. IM would come in handy however with IM you need to be at the computer alot. With my job and and being the only person here most of the time and can't always sit at the computer and resond to someone. Unfortunatly I am not much of a tech junkie and I don't have a cell phone so I can't do text message. I can honestly say I don't miss a cell phone because at times I like to be unconnected with the world.

Thing 6 On line image

This was a fun thing to do. There are so many things a person could make with this program to promote the library. You could even use the trading cards as bookmarks.

Thing 5 working with flickr

This thing was another fun exercise. There are many things you can do with pictures on the computer over the internet and many different ways to search for pictures. I made a mosaic using pictures off of flickr with the mosaic maker and then I made a jigsaw puzzle from one on my own pictures from another site. It was alot of fun and I can see when a person could use these tools for posters and story hours. I am really enjoying 23 things on a stick

Thing 4 Flickr

This was a very interesting project to do. I didn't realize that flickr was out there and that so many people choose to post their pictures there. I think it's a good way to save your photos but I don't think I would want mine public. However I choose to post a couple of my photos to my blog. I think this will help me in the future when I post pictures of library activities to my blog.

Thing 3--RSS Reader

I'm really starting to enjoy this 23 things program. Today I did the RSS and signed up for a reader. I enjoyed playing and experimenting with both programs just to see what they can do. There are so many options and I'm sure I will be trying both services out in the next coming weeks.

Thing 2

I agree with the articles that were posted and with Mr. Abrams that technology is always changing and that as librarians we must keep up with the changes in order to help our patrons better. Now only the younger and computer experienced user but also the older generation who doesn't know how to use a computer and want current and correct information on a subject, product or service. Also many of them hear of these different technologies being talked about on tv or in the newspapers and come in questions what it is and how it is used. If you have experience in using it and can give them a demo on how to use it they appreciate you and your library much more and see you as a useful part of their community. Library service goes back to basic customer service and the patrons are your customer.

Thing 1

Now that I have set up this blog I hope that I will be able to find it later. It was easy to set up and I'm hoping to learn more about blogs and other fun things thru this 23 things a stick program. Not only will it be helpful at the library but also it will come in handy in other areas of my life.
